Checking Back 3 – Passing Pattern
Set Up: Four players are set up inside of the small grid.
Procedure: As Player A dribbles, the other three players in the grid make checking runs away from him. When Player A makes eye contact with another player, (Player B in the diagram), he checks back to the ball in order to receive a pass. Play continues in this fashion, with three players making checking runs away from the dribbler before coming back to the ball to receive a pass.
Teaching Topics:
1 Checking runs.
2 Visual cues.
3 Width and depth.
Progressions:
1 Add one more group to the field.
Coaching Points:
1 Make runs away from the ball in order to create space for you to work back into.
2 Communicate by making eye contact, but don’t telegraph the play.
3 Get wide and out of the defender’s field of vision before checking back to the ball.
